OMGyouneedthat’s

origin story…

We met in 2008 while both working in fashion - Hally was in fashion PR at Krupp Group (later, at Starworks), and Lauren was at Glamour Magazine as an assistant, then Accessories Editor. We worked alongside each other in the industry until about 2013 when we both (unplanned!) left our jobs in fashion to start our families. During this time, and while navigating life as new moms to two little girls the same age, we lived a block away from each other in the West Village and spent everyday together. Over the next few years, we each had two more daughters, moved out of the city, (New Jersey for Hally, Connecticut for Lauren) and endured Covid with six kids between us. It was during that time that we started to think about going back to work in a way that felt manageable as moms with two young families. After a lot of brainstorming and helping friends and relatives on the side with their closets and styling, we decided to start @omgyouneedthat with the goal of helping other women like us.

How has your style evolved since leaving the hustle and bustle of NYC?

We both started working in fashion in our early twenties at a time when both our budgets and personal styles were evolving. There was a greater focus then on fast fashion and trendier pieces, and as we have gotten older, our focus has shifted to quality investment pieces and building out a capsule wardrobe.

What is the single most important factor in planning your outfit for the day?

First, what we have going on schedule-wise. Second, what will be most comfortable but appropriate for that situation.

You have a full day of meetings, school pick-up, and a girls’ dinner that night - there’s no time to go home, what are you wearing?!

Jeans, a white t-shirt, and a great blazer. We’d wear this with ballet flats during the day and if we could swap out the shoes to heels for night, we would. The key to making this look multifunctional for us would be the accessories. A classic belt and gold necklace ties the look together for day and night, then we’d add a red lip and hoops (easy to throw in your bag) for dinner.

What is your best piece of advice to those setting out to work with friends?

For us, our friendship comes first and we have always both agreed on that. We have essentially grown up together, know each other inside and out - strengths and weaknesses included - which provided us with a solid foundation to start our business. We have a relationship where we can be honest and raw with each other which carries over to @omgyouneedthat.
